张爱玲的「秀才英文」刘绍铭前一阵子断断续续的写了好几篇以张爱玲作品为题的短文，其中一篇说到她从小就立志像林语堂一样，做个双语作家。
董桥看了，来信问：「张爱玲的英文，究竟有多好？」他叫我不妨就此谈一谈，因为他相信《苹果日报》读者有兴趣。
我们说某某人的英文好，是笼统的恭维话。
要是对方追问下去：How good？ 你就得举些实例说明了。
张爱玲在太平洋战事爆发后，从香港回到上海，开始卖文为生。
她双语并用，英文稿的「处女作」 “Chinese Life and Fashions”（〈更衣记〉）一九四三年发表於The XXth Century（〈二十世纪〉）。
这时她是二十三岁。
一九五二年她抵达香港，次年开始为美国新闻处翻译美国文学作品。
《秧歌》（The Rice Sprout-Song）的中英文版，亦是她「滞留」香港时期写的。
英文稿於一九五五年由美国极负时誉的Charles Scribner's Sons出版。
张爱玲也在这一年「移民」到美国，在美国下半生继续用双语写作，偶然亦「中英互译」。
她这一段的文字生涯，我另有长文交代，这里不重覆了。
张爱玲的英文到家，照理说也是合该如是。
她十一岁开始即在美国教会办的圣玛利女校就读。
依胡辛在《最后的贵族.张爱玲》所说，这学校「和所有的教会学校一样，注重英文，轻视国文。
……这样的学校培养出来的女生，英文熟极而流，本国文字却连张请假条也贻笑大方：『某某因病故请假一天』？」她在香港大学两年主修英文。
据她弟弟张子静的记载，这一段时间她尽量避免使用中文。
写信和做笔记都用英文。
她为参加《西风》杂志徵文比赛写成的五百字〈天才梦〉，是她在香港期间唯一一次用中文书写的作品。
张爱玲能运用双语写作，但母语是中文。
所谓母语，就是一个人在成长时「浸淫」在母亲的怀抱中牙牙学来的语言。
「浸淫」是immersion。
从孩提时代听的、说的、看的、写的都是妈妈的语言，叫total immersion。
不论她日后花多大的工夫去学习，英文到底是张爱玲的「外语」。
母语的好处多多。
我以前在美国读书，有时在书本、媒体、或引车卖浆者流那里听来的一些表述，翻字典查辞书，还是不懂，最后只好请教老美同学。
他们也计穷时，会搔著头皮说 “I don't know, but my gut feeling is…。
我听著听著，羡慕？已。
英语是他们的母语。
我书读得可能比他们多，但在这关头上，只有他们才有资格说什麽是来自「腑肝的感觉」。
张爱玲小时上美国人办的学校，但下课后回家，跟家人、佣人和小朋友说的是中文。
在香港两年，因为她不懂广东话，倒是整天「沐浴」在英文氛围的好机会。
在美国定居那些日子，特别是跟Ferdinand Reyher婚后十年，她日常使用英文的机会更多。
但就学习语言的角度看来，人在成年后学到的英文，只能说是bookish English，就说是「秀才英文」吧。
就我看过的张爱玲英文书写而言，说清丽典雅可以，却没有到玩弄於股掌之间的地步。
乔志高（高克毅）老前辈的英文可以呼风唤雨，可是据他自己的供述，屈指算起数字来，一、二、三、四还是比one, two, three, four容易上口。
说到Helen这女子，有时竟refer to as “he”。
而Tom变了she。
因为George虽然在美国出生，可是小小年纪就跟随父母返国，失掉了跟美国小混混撒野的机会。
英文不是张爱玲的母语，可在「秀才英文」的书写上并不吃亏。
现在举些实例。
一九五六年她在美国The Reporter上发表了短篇小说 “Stale Mates”（「老搭子」）。
后来她把这篇作品用中文改写为〈五四遗事〉，一九五八年刊登於夏济安主编的《文学杂志》。
“Stale Mates”中这段文字相当漂亮：The tea in the cups shone faintly, in each cup a floating silver dish swaying slightly with the movement of the boat. Her face and white-clad shoulders were blue-rimmed with moonlight. It stunned him how she could look just the same when so much had happened.张爱玲跟我们说过，〈五四遗事〉讲的，虽然是： “Stale Mates”同样的故事，但表现手法「略有出入」，有些段落是改写了。
上面一段引文，刚好没有什麽改动，不妨录下做参考，或可加深我们对张爱玲「秀才英文」的认识。
玻璃杯里的茶微微发光，每一杯的水面都是一个银色图片，随著船身的晃动轻轻的摇摆著。
她的脸与白衣的肩膀被月光镀上一道蓝边。
人事的变化这样多，而她竟和从前一模一样，一点也没有改变，这使他无论如何想不明白，心里只觉得恍惚。
「秀才英文」就是把话说得规规矩矩，说某某有钱不是说rich就是wealthy，不会说成with deep pockets或loaded(with money)的。
因此按道理说，张爱玲的英文，如果仅用於叙事，不会吃什麽「亏」。
看她的英文著作或翻译自己的作品，感觉到她偶然力不从心的地方，是小说人物的对白。
有时话说得太一板一眼了。
在美国以Waiting（《等待》）一书成名的Ha Jin（哈金），用并非母语的英文写作，在这方面也像张爱玲一样的「捉襟见肘」。
我在〈轮回转生：张爱玲的中英互译〉一文有详细的交代，这里不多说了。
张爱玲的英文有多好？她只有在营造小说的dialogue时才露出「马脚」？要回答这问题，又得举些实例。
也许我该趁此机会说明，我的母语是中文。
